The NRMA motorfest is an event that we all know, as its become
synonymous with Australia Day celebrations in Sydney. Its a show and
shine on the largest of scales and a vast diverse amount of vehicles.
There are few events during the year that close a few streets of the
city, and this is oneof them. Both Macquarie and College streets are
closed off to the daily traffic milling about the city of Sydney.
The display begins at the War Memorial in Hyde Park where military
vehicles are displayed by the AMVCS Club. From Hyde Park the display
continues along
College Street towards Macquarie St. With the St Mary's Cathedral in the
backdrop and over 1000 vehicles (Pre 1978) they line both sides
of the road.
There are vehicles from a diverse range of years and
makes. This year featured the Fire Engines of yesteryear, classic holden's
towing caravans from the day, NRMA driver education simulator, VW's,
Alfa's, Holdens, Fords, Rovers, MG's, Jaguars and a large collection
of vintage vehicles. The atmosphere and history of having an event of
this proportion on our National Day helps transport motor enthusiasts
back in time. When was the last time you could recall seeing EJ - EH
holdens lining the streets outside of Parliament House ? Or catching
an old FJ Holden Lions Cab ?
The vehicles were meticulously prepared and show'd
off by their owners. The success of the NRMA motorfest is a tribute to
the efforts of the car clubs and members that take part. It's an event
that's already penciled in on the January 2009 calender ! Happy Australia
Day 2008 !
